TEACHING 2010

I will be starting the Monday morning sessions from the 1st of February. I will be working at Greatmore Street studios in Woodstock, (0214479699 if you need directions) 9.00am for 9.30am; tea and coffee, easels, chairs and tables; paper for sale; R100 per session. The session will end at 12:30pm.

As I am keen to draw I have asked Wonder to work one or two sessions a month. In February I will do the first two weeks and he will facilitate the second two.

We have decided to stay with the “drop in” system for the first two months and hope that we will accommodate everyone’s needs this way. You need to bring all your own material and take it all home with you.

I will be able to do weekend workshops and Saturday sessions later in the year and if there is a need we can organise a Thursday review session some times.

Just a note to say that my website has been updated. The exhibition at the Irma Stern has been extended until the 23rd. The follow on exhibition will open at SMAC in Stellenbosch on Saturday the 30th of January; Christopher Peters is the opening speaker.

I recommend you visit the three exhibitions at Iziko/SANG. They are really worth while.

TEACHING 2009

AUGUST SEPTEMBER WORKSHOP
Finding objects.
The reality of “magic”:

Working with objects that we chose as images with which to work reveals a special connection between subject and object. By making images of these objects we aim at uniting the outer and the inner; the unity between the microcosm and the macrocosm. The various ‘things’ that we live with, or ‘find’, have a mysterious quality that links us to them. It’s as if there is an innate magical connection between subject and object, as revealed by the Paleolithic parietal cave paintings.
These “things” have an essential quality about them. It is not necessarily their accidental visual form, but something that these things carry. Some objects carry a sense of ‘beauty’ or meaning so that the painter is not reproducing the object but defining or refining it; surrounding it with a numinous aura. The painting becomes the objective translation of this very subjective experience and “embeds” or “encases” the objects in this atmosphere.

This course will be an eight week course starting on Thursday the 6th of August and ending on the September 24th. (9 am to 12.30)

The Monday sessions will start on August 3rd and finish on September 21st.

Booking is essential; R800 per course. There are 14 places available.
Venue; Greatmore street space, Woodstock.
